'Observing' by Sofia Wicks

There are emotions so strong that we feel them twisting inside us. My work starts with a question: what would happen if we could see that? My figures exist in a world that resembles ours, but isn't: a space where what is normally only felt (the distortion of an intense emotion, the weight of an invisible force) becomes visible, physical, real.
A recurring hand appears throughout my work, sometimes holding a figure, sometimes wrapping around it or manipulating it. This hand personifies the external forces (chance, desire, universal truths we don't control) that shape us without our noticing. The relationship between the figure and this hand changes in each painting: the figure may reach for it, resist it, or surrender to it.
I use surrealist colors (saturated greens, pinks, blues) to signal that these scenes don't take place on the physical plane, but in that other space: the space of our internal world. Each painting is an attempt to give shape to the invisible, to make what normally only exists within us finally visible from the outside.
