'English Garden' by Raoul Orzabal
Oil on Canvas
100x80cm
After finishing my degree in 2016, my post graduation paintings have explored many forms of imagery consisting of an abstract arrangement of objects and textures. To build up these images, I collected and painted a series of different textures and built them into organised compositions to fill the canvas or board. What I learnt was that this style could imitate almost anything, ranging from architecture to natural formation.
I had began building my own collage-like oil painting mimics and video game glitch effects, (such as falling through the map). deleting large sections of the painting to allow other images to appear behind them. This resulted in pixelated effects, which I interpreted into my own oil paintings while. This technique allowed me to produce a new series of works exploring this effect as the work looks as if it had been caught in action. For brushwork I was keen build up the paintings in multiple layers.
This latest phase of my work began in 2018 where I dedicated myself to working on single paintings, which would take months to complete. Using my latest techniques I have attempted to create my own form of landscape and cityscape paintings. My work usually ranges from minimal to highly decorative in appearance with strong contrasts and movement. My work also highlights the impact of the man made and nature such as reference to the destruction of out natural world via climate breakdown.
